There are multiple definitions for what a hostage is: 'Someone held as a prisoner in order to force the other people involved to do what the enemy wants.' 'One that is involuntarily controlled by an outside influence.'
What these definitions share is that a hostage has no choice about their situation. What's happening to them is not only taking place against their will, but cannot be stopped until the hostage-taker is finished.
